Many fans will be familiar with Oscar winning Phil Tippett who was instrumental in creating the stop-motion and go-motion animation scenes for ILM in the original Star Wars trilogy. Recently Phil joined Jeff Goldblum on his Disney Plus TV docuseries ‘The World According to Jeff Goldblum’. In the series Jeff picks a subject which interests him and explores it with his typical trademark style and flare.
In season 2 episode 5 he goes on a quest to discover why we love the things that scare us most in ‘MONSTERS’. 10 minutes and 35 seconds into the episode Jeff reunites with Phil at his Tippett Studios in Berkeley, California to learn what it takes to create a model monster. They first met 30 years ago on the set of Jurassic Park, another groundbreaking visual effects movie.
There’s no discussion about Star Wars but if you briefly see some original footage of Phil working on a Tauntaun and Rancor from the 80’s. I also spotted Jabba the Hutt and an Aqualish but there’s probably more in the treasure trove of a workshop. Let us know what you spot. The clip lasts around 6 minutes and gives a good albeit brief look into the mind of the award-winning visual effects producer.
Two seasons of The World According to Jeff Goldblum are available to watch on Disney+ now.
