As the year trundles along, one that all of us will no doubt remember for the rest of our lives, the likelihood of a 5th Indiana Jones adventure with Harrison Ford in the rough-and-tumble lead role seems less and less likely, especially now that screenwriter David Koepp has stepped aside as James Mangold takes the directing chair from Steven Spielberg.

“Not anymore. When James Mangold came in … he deserves a chance to take his shot at it. I’d done several versions with Steven. And when Steven left, it seemed like the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it.”

Koepp will still likely retain a co-writing credit and walk away with a seven figure sum for his troubles, but another what-if Doctor Jones tale joins the pile of unmade Indy adventures along with Indiana Jones and The Monkey King, Indiana Jones and the Saucermen from Mars, Indiana Jones and the Lost Continent and Indiana Jones and the City of Gods.
