It’s hard to imagine the first of the Star Wars stories being called anything other than Rogue One, but the recent IGN play of Rogue One with Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz in attendance reveals that indeed, the movie very nearly had a different title.
Alternate titles including Dark Times, Shadow of the Death Star and Star Wars: Rebellion were considered – all fine titles for comics or novels, but none with the required ‘punch’ needed to step it up to movie status. After all, there’s a world of difference between a portentous title like The Empire Strikes Back and Planet of the Hoojibs (and that’s no diss to our furry pals from Arbra; Plif became a galactic senator! There’s plenty of fascinating nuggets to unpack from the screening from Weitz and Whitta, which you can listen to above while playing along with the film.
