While George Lucas is known as the Maker, Ralph McQuarrie may best be described as the Creator, designing the template look and feel of the galaxy far, far away and imbuing it with his own unique style. Born on 13th June 1929 in Gary, Indiana, today would have been McQuarrie’s 92nd birthday, and as always on this day we remember and thank him for designing that galaxy we love so much.

After his passing on 3rd March 2012, George Lucas had this to say about the legendary concept designer.

“His genial contribution, in the form of unequalled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘do it like this’.”
