Hurling up the box office domestic chart from 58th to 48th position after a stunning box office weekend that saw the film land on 2,775 screens and $25,200,000 added to it’s haul(along with a further $17,000,000 globally), Revenge of the Sith not only took the number two spot for the weekend but has now joined the $400m club, and has a chance of passing the both the original ’93 Jurassic Park and ’02 Spider-Man to approach the all-time domestic top 40, where Toy Story 3 sits at number 40 on $415,004,880. Globally the story is even better as the film leaps from $849,997,605 and 95th position to $892,235,635 and the high ground of 78th position right behind Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on $897,468,207.

Revenge of the Sith has now passed the $400 million mark at the domestic box office, thanks to the $25 million that it made this weekend. The movie made an additional $17 million from overseas territories, for a cumulative re-release debut of $42 million. Globally, the film’s total haul is nearing the $900 million mark. Revenge of the Sith marked the end of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, whose legacy remains as tricky as ever. The trilogy has its fans, but is largely considered to be inferior to the original three movies. That being said, Revenge of the Sith earned better reviews than both its predecessors, The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

It currently holds a “certified fresh” 79% rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, as compared to the 61% score of the second film and the 54% score of the first film. The franchise was re-launched a decade ago by J.J. Abrams, with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Revenge of the Sith marked franchise creator George Lucas’ final film in the director’s chair; it concluded the origin story of the villainous Darth Vader, or, as he was then known, Anakin Skywalker.

If a good week follows before it leaves screens worldwide, a step into the $900m club looks possible – ask Hayden and Samuel L. Jackson, who were at a screening in LA to celebrate.
