Sad news arrives as one of the men responsible for the iconic silhouettes of Star Wars has passed away. Colin Cantwell was a part of the early creative team who during 1975 brought life to the dreams of George Lucas, giving early form to iconic vessels like the TIE Fighter, the X-Wing, Y-Wing, Luke’s Skyhopper, the Death Star and the Star Destroyer. His early Millennium Falcon design became the Blockade Runner – the very first Star Wars vessel we ever saw onscreen – and the DNA of his creativity infused everything that followed.

Here, Cantwell spoke with Mark Adams about how he got the Star Wars gig.

His contributions to the Star Wars galaxy were integral to the success of the film, crafting vessels that became indelible shapes familiar to children around the world. To his partner of 24 years Sierra Dall, his family, friends and colleagues we pass on our sincere condolences.
