The Endgame is nigh for Avatar

The ten year tenure of Avatar at the top of the worldwide box office chart is about to snap as Avengers: Endgame fast approaches the current all-time champ, now sitting just $173.2 million dollars behind Avatar’s previously unreachable $2,788.0bn.

Milestones continue to tumble as Endgame passes Avatar in the States to become the all-time number two film with $770.8m in the hole compared to Avatar’s unadjusted $760.5. Worldwide, Endgame is just $156m off reaching $2bn, which would make it only the second film to do that along with Avatar.

Endgame drops from the number one position in its fourth week as the superb John Wick 3 takes the top spot, and after 24 days the film is sitting behind the phenomenal total posted by The Force Awakens in 2015. By this point, TFA had nabbed $812,734,828 while Endgame has a hefty $770,805,870. Of course, Endgame far outstrips any of the Star Wars series worldwide, where the GFFA entries usually sit near or around a 50/50 split between domestic and worldwide figures.

The Force Awakens: $2,068.2 Domestic 45.3% Overseas 54.7% 2015

The Last Jedi: $1,332.5 Domestic 46.5% Overseas 53.5% 2017

Rogue One: $1,056.1 Domestic 50.4% Overseas 49.6% 2016

The Phantom Menace: $1,027.0 Domestic 46.2% Overseas 53.8% 1999

As an additional note, 9 of the top 10 all-time films feature VFX by ILM. It’s like the 80’s all over again.

It’s likely that by this time next week, Endgame will have taken that top slot, but could it become the first film to breach the $3bn barrier? Only $385.2m to go….
