After directing one of the highest grossing movies ever and then following it up with a critically acclaimed, box office bothering mystery thriller, surely the most obvious next step is to direct a Pokémon Go advert, isn’t it?

It might not be for some people, but then not everyone is Rian Johnson and the Episode 8 director explains why he chose to take the helm of a Pokémon advertisement.

“Pokémon Go has kept me engaged with my friends remotely as I’ve been practicing physical distancing these past few months. As a longtime Pokémon trainer, it was a real pleasure working with Niantic on this spot. It was a new experience for me to direct a production remotely, and I enjoyed the highly collaborative process and think we put together a fun and upbeat commercial that fans will enjoy.”

There you go, simple. Rian likes Pokémon and was only to happy to direct the ad.
