The Sequoia Symphony Orchestra will launch the new season with a concert movie that made Indiana Jones a household name – Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The orchestra will perform John Williams’ musical score to “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as the film plays on the big screen at the Visalia Fox Theatre. There will be two performances, 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
For those who feel the idea of “symphony” means “boring,” the Sequoia Symphony has been broadening its appeal. It traditionally plays a film concert each year, and choosing to perform to a popular adventure movie notches up the appeal.
The symphony is hoping the “Raiders” concert will appeal to families and people who perhaps aren’t regular symphony goers, Executive Director Josh Banda said.
The symphony also hosted a jazz series during the summer, “Jazz on the Corner” at The Cellar Door. Jazz combos from the symphony and local singers Rosalinda Verde Alexander and Hope Garcia showed that the symphony musicians are very versatile in their talents.
In addition, symphony musicians have begun a “Music Medicine” mini-concert at Kaweah Delta Hospital each month, which has proven to be a soothing and enjoyable respite for those at the hospital.

Admission: Standard pricing is $25 to $50 depending on location in the theater. Approximately 40 “legacy” tickets that cost $1 (in celebration of the orchestra’s 60-year anniversary. Tickets were only $1 back then) are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and in person at the Symphony office starting next Monday, Oct. 14. Student tickets are $10.
