When Star Wars returned in 1999 with The Phantom Menace, not only did a new era of the saga arrive, but also with it came new and exciting fighting styles that – arguably – delivered the most thrilling lightsaber sequence of the whole nine-film series, the fight between Obi-Wan and Maul.

Here John Knoll and Nick Gillard look back at that amazing sequence from Episode 1.

Watch as Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor, VFX Supervisor John Knoll and Stunt Coordinator/Fight Choreographer Nick Gillard reflect on the crown jewel of lightsaber fights, “Duel of the Fates.” The fan-favorite fight saw Jedi duo Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn take on the Sith assassin Darth Maul in a two-on-one fight for the ages. The cast and crew explains why the premiere fight of Episode I had to be so spectacular, points out some cool little details, and why they think it holds up as the best lightsaber duel ever filmed.
