With the official Star Wars day of celebration being Life Day, and the recent arrival of George Mann and Cavan Scott’s Life Day Treasury as well as the forthcoming Life Day one shot from Marvel, this delicious release from Insight Editions written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak couldn’t be served up at a better time. With recipes starting with appetizers and snacks and running right through to drinks and the best way to celebrate Life Day at home, this really is the perfect way – and the best time with the festive season winging its way towards us at lightspeed – to celebrate Star Wars style and have a whole load of fun whilst doing it.

Reviewing this book is enough to get the stomach rumbling louder than a hungry wookiee on Endor. Kicking off with appetizers and snacks we look at Shi-Shok Fruit Bowls, a delicious-looking fruit concoction that takes all of 15 minutes to put together, through to Pickled Mynock, a shrimp-based dish that takes just 5 minutes to prep and 5 minutes to cook. Easy, tasty and as described by Maz Kanata’s legendary galactic Chef Strono Tuggs all with a story as we move on to Side Dishes where Spine Tree Spears (cauliflower florets and taking all of 10 minutes to prepare) and Cirilian Noodle Salad (every bit as tasty as it sounds with noodles, salad, dressing and just 20 minutes prep and 5 minutes cooking time) wait to bounce up and down on your taste buds.

We then ease into the Main Courses, where wannabe cooks really get to stretch their talents and the partners of the cooks get to bask in the simmering glow of a meal well cooked. Crait Crusted Cod not only looks mouth-watering but consists of cod, lemons, eggs, black pepper and as told by Strono a baked dish reminiscent of the surface of Crait itself. Kublag Curry takes 10 minutes to prep and 35 to cook and consists of chicken, carrots, potatoes and hails from the sanctuary moon of Endor. The stories of gathering the ingredients by Strono is hugely enjoyable, and prospective chefs should certainly take the time to read these stories where he occasionally suggests partnering the dish with other recipes throughout the book.

Desserts are always a welcome arrival at any dinner table and the dishes laid out here are no exception. Who doesn’t want Wookiee-Ookiees, Chewie-shaped biscuits with cinamon and nutmeg, or Kashyyyk Cake, a marscarpone based delicacy that including prep and cooking takes just an hour but looks good enough to melt in the mouth. Complimenting all meals are the Drinks, with another Kashyyyk-based recipe Wroshyr Sap Cider (apple cider, cinamon sticks) and Scarif Slush looking just like a drink any visitor to the Citadel Tower would want to be sipping in the tropical Scarif sun.

We wrap up the book with the lyrics to Joh Blastoh, a traditional Huttese songs covered by bands across the galaxy, and the best ways to celebrate Life Day wherever sector of the cosmos you are in. That includes Life Day Orbs, the Tree of Life, Life Day Robes (although you’ll never look as good as Chewie did in his red Holiday Special robes) and beyond even dietary considerations and a measurement conversion chart. It really is a well thought-out book, even down to the colour of the pages which give off a warm, easing glow that makes flicking through the pages a pleasure. Great work all round, and definitely one to buy for your food-loving friends.
