D23 Expo: Will Boba Fett be in The Mandalorian? “Boba Fett is not” says Jon Favreau

Speaking to Ginger on Good Morning America, Jon Favreau made it clear that the legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett will not be a part of The Mandalorian, with the focus of the Disney Plus show being on fresh new characters.

“Boba Fett is not, they’re all new, original characters, and I might add a timeframe that there’s a thirty year stretch of storytime that hasn’t been explored at all, except in the extended universe.”

GMA also asked how deep the show goes with easter eggs.

“Oh yeah, I mean even the rifle with a forked end on it, the bayonet on the end was from The Holiday Special with Boba Fett in it, the original time you saw him, so we have lots of deep cuts in the show and I can’t wait for people who love Star wars to see it.”

Of course, with a character in the back pocket like Fett that fans have focused on and followed for decades, with masses of merchandise, costume groups and even it’s own language, Favreau is highly unlikely to announce his presence in the show before it happens.

The last time we saw Boba Fett in canon he was being swallowed by the sarlacc, but as Favreau rightly points out, Fett briefly returned in the original Marvel Comics run (this time swallowed by the sarlacc while inside a sandcrawler!) and more substantially in the wider EU.

What better way to hook a general audience who, if they’ve heard of any Mandalorian character, they will have heard of Fett. Fandom would rightly go nuts if Sabine Wren – who we know is alive in this era thanks to the final moments of Star Wars Rebels – appeared, so why not the Man(do) that started it all?
