Statement by Harrison Ford (Actor and Environmental Activist) at the High-Level meeting of the Alliance on Rainforests during the Climate Action Summit 2019. Rainforests constitute the lungs of our planet. The Amazon alone produces 20% of the world’s oxygen. This unique environmental treasure, as well as others, in Africa and South-East Asia and America, are being threatened by fires and deforestation. As a result, their perimeters have been severely decreasing year after year. These forests are essential to life on this planet. They are massive carbon sinks and one of the greatest reserves of global biodiversity. This event will launch a long-term response to this plight. It will build on the latest G7 Summit meeting in Biarritz, France, which initiated an international and regional emergency response to increase and coordinate efforts to cooperate with the fight against wildfires in Bolivia and Paraguay. It will look towards the next meeting of the COP 25 in Santiago, Chile, to further deepen our resolve. Climate Action Summit 2019 website: https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/
