StarWars.com take a look at Solo: A Star Wars Story, specifically the design of Han and Chewie and how designs running right back to the earliest Ralph McQuarrie images brought us a much younger Han and a slightly younger Chewbacca.

Much like in McQuarrie’s day, concept artists sketched early drafts of the story involving Wookiees in stormtrooper-like fatigues and Han and Chewie meeting as soldiers, with the Wookiee bravely saving Han in battle. As the story was revised, and the casting contracts signed, concept artists updated interpretations of scenes and costumes. But the heart of the story always remained the same.

“The story always revolved around Han Solo,” Lucasfilm design supervisor James Clyne has said, “this lone character who really only wants to get enough cash together to buy his own ship and be his own man.”
