Our series of interviews From Different Points of View highlights Star Wars fans from across the world and allows them to tell you about Star Wars fandom from their point of view and how it has influenced their lives and the direction it has taken them.

This week’s point of view is from Canada and it is Dave Araujo.

When did your love of Star Wars begin and what was it that drew you to it?

I’ve loved all things ‘outer space’ since seeing all the moon landings as a child. It’s there that I was drawn to Star Trek, Space 1999 and Star Wars.

How has Star Wars influenced you?

The creativity and the vision of the creators and producers of the movies, books and the many tendrils of the Star Wars universe has spurred me to pursue many areas in my life. I have licenses and certifications in several technical areas and I’m an accomplished musician. The creativity alone guides me in my daily life at work and home. My approach to tasks is noticeably different than the standard ‘taught’ disciplines. My success rate is higher as well.

What is your most memorable Star Wars moment?

I’d have to say it was the experience of building a stormtrooper kit, getting my approval and acceptance into the 501st and doing my first official troop. It was May 4th this year, a very special day and raised money for kids with cancer to go to Disneyland through the Make A Wish Foundation.

To see my build thread please click here. It’s very detailed with some really nice custom fabrications to make the kit hold up under use and easy to put on.

How do you celebrate your fandom, do you for example collect anything, cosplay or have a tattoo?

I have a few novelty things like a stormtrooper cooking apron and drinking glass but mostly celebrate by being part of the Star Wars community that helps others in many ways. As I mentioned there’s the charity/benefit side, but there’s also the sharing side. A few more know that there is a place they can go to be part of it through cosplay and so on because I introduce them to it.

What’s the best part of being a member of Star Wars communities?

I love sharing the build expert with new and not so new builders. I have a few custom modifications that are used in the build process that have received good reviews. I love getting out and about in my armour on my own or on a troop. I’ve met a world of wonderful people who may not always feel comfortable anywhere else but we always feel good getting together.

What are your next plans for Star Wars?

I’m preparing to build another costume, the TIE Fighter Pilot. Beyond that I have a design in the works and my sights set on using my technical and creative skills to build something nobody has done yet.

What are you looking forward to from Lucasfilm Ltd and Star Wars in the future?

I look forward to everything they plan for the future. The universe is limitless so I can’t wait to see what they explore next.

Is there anything that hasn’t happened yet in Star Wars that you would like to see happen?

Personally I would like to see them follow the Star Trek TV series models and do seasons of different eras and areas of the Star Wars universe.

To end each point of view we ask you to answer some rapid fire questions, gut feeling and no hesitation…

  1. Favourite Star Wars Film? – A New Hope
  2. Favourite Character? – I like the stormtroopers the most.
  3. Most ridiculous random piece of merchandise? – stormtrooper cooking apron
  4. Holiday Special or Caravan of Courage? – It might be interesting to see more about the Ewoks.
  5. Clone Wars or Rebels? – Rebels
  6. Worst Star Wars film? – I don’t dislike any of them. Can’t think of one I wouldn’t watch again.
  7. Porgs or Ewok? – Ewok.
  8. Treasured Star Wars possession? – My screen accurate armour.
  9. What colour of lightsaber would you have? – Black if they made it.
  10. What planet would you visit? – Coruscant.
