Luke Skywalker was always destined to die in Episode 8

The Last Jedi has arguably had more anger and ire piled upon it than any other film, certainly since The Phantom Menace, and one of those hot spots was the death of Luke Skywalker, so the reveal – via Pablo Hidalgo‘s latest book Star Wars: Fascinating Facts – that Skywalker also died in George Lucas’s original treatment for Episode 8 might come as a surprise to some.

Years before “The Last Jedi” began development, the treatment left behind by George Lucas in 2012 also had Episode VIII be the one wherein Luke Skywalker would die.

Possibly even more interesting than this news is the tantalising thought of the Lucas treatments being out there, somewhere. Perhaps, one day, we will get to read what the Maker’s original ideas were for what would – in another life – have been his third trilogy.
